Samsung Didn’t Bring Its Tizen Phone to Russia. But We Rocked Dev Summit Anyway

In our previous post, we highlighted the Samsung Z Unpacked Event where Samsung’s first consumer-ready Tizen smartphone was scheduled to launch on July 10th for the Russian market.

However, the event was cancelled at the last moment and so team rollApp joined the Tizen community only at the Developer Summit in Moscow.

Why Tizen Smartphone Postponed

In a statement sent to The Verge, Samsung said that it “plans to postpone” the Russian release of the phone, but will continue to “actively work with Tizen Association members to further develop TIzen OS and the Tizen ecosystem.”

Vlad Pavlov, rollApp CEO and founder, in his talk with Wall Street Journal’s Olga Razumovskaya commented: “I definitely see movement, it’s just a natural process — this is how business works.” In a statement to WSJ, the Korean company said “the smartphone will appear on the Russian market later, when we can offer our users a fullest portfolio of applications.”

How rollApp Brings Cloud-Based Apps to Tizen

And that’s exactly where rollApp steps in – our online virtualization technology already allowed us to port over 50 applications to Tizen OS. See how we did it in this handy presentation.

rollApp CEO Vlad Pavlov and CTO Dima Malenko rehearsing their presentation.

During the summit, we unveiled rollApp’s cross-platform development for Tizen, shook hands, smiled a lot, and listened to awesome people like Kirill Danilov, Renat Nyazhemetdinov, Ash Nazir, Kirill Chuvilin among many others with their insights on Unity-Tizen tools, Zvooq for Tizen, Tizen App Store, Android vs Tizen, and even the future of Uber.

The State of Tizen Samsung Z: News, Opinions and Hands-On

Tizen, a Linux-based open-source OS, just about to enter the world of mobile platforms. By catapulting more than 50 cloud apps to Tizen Store, we at rollApp are proud to be a significant part of the process. On top of that, we’ve broadened our vision on developing cross-platform cloud applications – as you probably know, previously we launched them on the iPad and Chromebooks

Just before the Tizen Samsung Z Unpacked Event to be held in Moscow, Russia on July 10, 2014 – where Samsung’s first Tizen Smartphone will be officially launched – we’d like to highlight some major recent advances, turning points and expectations around the smartphone.

So here are our top picks that cover all the major news around Tizen Samsung Z:

Samsung Electronics unveiled the Samsung Z, the first commercially available smartphone powered by the Tizen platform, on July 02, 2014 in San Francisco. Complete with a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display and a 2.3 GHz Quad-core processor, the Samsung Z makes the perfect choice for consumers who want a differentiated user experience in an efficient and light-weight smartphone. Samsung Z will be available in Russia in the third quarter of 2014.

Jonathan Cheng, Wall Street JournalSamsung Amps Up the Google Love: “The indirect reference is a reminder that, for all the affection Samsung is publicly voicing for Google, even the best of friends go through tough times. If there’s any larger strategy at play, Samsung says, it’s not trying to muscle out Android with Tizen; it’s simply that the company wants to offer consumers all kinds of choices — between Android, Windows Phone and Tizen, for instance.”

Sam Byford, The VergeSamsung hedges Android bet with first Tizen phone: "The Samsung Z is the first Tizen smartphone, representing a third pillar alongside Samsung’s efforts with Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone.“

Ewan Spence, Forbes – Samsung Releases An Avalanche Of Androids For A Smartphone Summer: "If it is as successful as Samsung hopes (and potentially, as Google fears), then I would expect next year’s batch of low-to-mid range handsets to feature some Tizen powered handsets in the mix.”

Natasha Lomas, TechCrunch – Samsung Outs Its First Tizen-Powered Smartphone: “It is of course fantastically unlikely that Tizen is going to grow to the point where it entirely replaces Android in Samsung’s portfolio. But the platform gives Samsung another string to its bow.”

Ashiq Nazir, TizenExperts: hands-on with Tizen-based Samsung Z:

Michael Sawh, Trusted ReviewsSamsung Tizen OS: 6 Things You Need To Know: “We were quite impressed by Tizen. Samsung has worked with Intel to develop Tizen. It is Linux-based platform built from Nokia and Intel’s ditched MeeGo. Tizen is a HTML5-based operating system. For the user, it means we can expect slicker mobile web applications for phones and tablets.”

Michael Kan, PC World – Tizen OS gets Baidu, ZTE, Softbank and Sprint among 15 new partners: The new partnerships are a sign of growing interest in the mobile OS at a time when Google’s Android is dominating the smartphone market.

Ben Woods, TheNextWeb Samsung Gear Live and LG G Android Wear smartwatches available to pre-order today: “The decision for Samsung to launch an Android Wear-based smartwatch is an interesting one considering the company recently made the switch to using its own Tizen OS for its second generation Galaxy Gear smartwatches.”

The 5 Mobile Computing Stories You've (Probably) Missed This Week

It was a huge week for mobile computing – Amazon, Google and Samsung were among the week’s hottest app releases and product/platform launches.

Here’s rollApp’s top five news stories of the week (June 23-27, 2014). Of course, we didn’t include anything the FIFA World Cup-related but, hey, you can always follow Alexi Lalas on Twitter @AlexiLalas.

Without further ado, let’s go.

1. All dates are finally set. rollApp will be launching 50+ applications at Tizen Samsung Z Unpacked Event in Moscow, Russia on July 10, 2014.

From the hands-on with Samsung Z by Ashiq Nazir: “We do not have any lag with the user interface that many android users seem to detest with hardware manufacturers own custom user interface skins that run on top of vanilla android, another reason to come over to Tizen.”

2. Android’s upcoming L release reveals its ‘L Developer Preview’, an early glimpse at the next version of Android. During its I/O keynote, Google showcased “a detailed approach to typography and spacing” and created new design guidelines.

Everything Google announced at Google I/O 2014 in one handy list.

3. Google Play for Education comes to Chromebooks:

Google Play for Education started with tablets, but teachers told us they wanted to use it to find apps, books, and videos for Chromebooks too. So today we’re expanding Google Play for Education to US K-12 Chromebook schools.” said Pratip Banerji, Product Manager. “Share Chrome apps instantly, with the whole class or with individual students. Soon we’re adding brand new apps from partners.”

4. Amazon released a new device - the Fire Phone: “The new phone’s sexiest feature is Firefly. At a push of a button on the side of the phone, the back camera recognizes products in the real world, with bar codes and other product information, then displays ways to buy the product on Amazon.”

“The biggest challenge of modern UI design is knowing when to stop. The current leaders in mobile computing have already learned this through hard-won experience. Amazon will figure it out eventually too, if it doesn’t charm its users to death first.” ~ Amazon’s Fire Phone May Be Too Magical for Its Own Good.

5. Upcoming Linux Foundation and Tizen events announced:

The Tizen Developer Summit in Seoul, Korea November 11-12 and Shanghai, China October 27 - 29, 2014.
