rollApp lets you run desktop apps, work with files, get things done — right from the browser on any device.

rollApp File Opener

Ever since we started working on running applications in a browser we were thinking how we can use the technology we build to enrich the experience of interacting with the World Wide Web and enable users to easily do something that was clumsy and awkward before. And one such thing is dealing with files you encounter on the Web.

Usually, when you find a file that may be of interest, you have to download it, go to your downloads folder, try to open the file with one of the installed applications (if you are lucky to have one!). In an unfortunate case, when you do not have an application to handle the type of file you downloaded, you need to figure out, what application can open this file, download and install it, and only then would you be able to open the file and see if that is what you need. That’s tedious and time consuming!

To help that we developed rollApp File Opener - an extension for Google Chrome and Firefox which lets you open [almost] any file you come across, when browsing the Internet, with just one click. When there is a link to a file on a web page, our extension will popup a little toolbar over that link. Now, when you click the link itself or the Open button in the toolbar, we will find an application for exactly this type of file, download the file to our server and launch the application to open it. Of course, if you still wish to download the file, click the Download button and the file will end up right there in the downloads folder on your computer.

No need to download files, no need to look for necessary applications - we’ll do all of that for you. What’s even better - you can edit files right away and save your changes right to your Dropbox, Google Docs, Box or 4shared! We already handle more than 100 different file types and as we grow our collection of apps there will be even more of them.

Introducing Clipboard Manager

Being able to cut something to clipboard and then paste the very same thing somewhere else has been an integral part of working with applications since long ago.

Since initial introduction, when working with cloud applications running at rollApp, one could naturally use cut, copy and paste text and objects within the application making full use of server-side clipboard. However, it was not possible to get the selection content and paste it into another application running locally, nor was it possible to paste something from local clipboard into the cloud application.

Now we’ve bridged this gap! With Clipboard Manager cut, copy and paste strings and rich text blocks between rollApp cloud application and your local applications. Since the application is running in the browser and modern browsers, as a security measure, put hard restrictions on manipulating the clipboard, the process is a little bit more involved than simple Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V. Here is how it works.

Copying Selection from the Cloud App

Whenever you select and copy or cut something (using keyboard shortcuts, toolbar or context menu) in the cloud we will get the selection data and make it available in the Clipboard Manager. We will also show a little hint to let you know how to get to the content you just copied.

Now you need to call Clipboard Manager to get to the selection. The hint also suggests where to find the button to call Clipboard Manager. When you click it, Clipboard Manager will open and it will show the content you copied. For your convenience it will already be selected so that the only thing you have to do is to press Ctrl-C (or ⌘-C on Mac) and you can paste the selection into any local application.

When you are done with copying and switch to a different window, Clipboard Manager will be closed automatically.

Pasting into the Cloud App

When you need to paste something into the cloud application, you have to do that via the Clipboard Manager.

Open Clipboard Manager from the toolbar and paste clipboard content using Ctrl-V (or ⌘-V on Mac). The content will be automatically sent to the application and pasted at the current cursor location. Clipboard Manager will close after you do that and you can continue working with the application.

Technical Underpinnings

Technically, when dealing with cloud application running at rollApp there two clipboards at play: one on the user’s computer and another one on the cloud server, where the application is running. Ideally, those two should be synchronized but modern browsers prevent web pages and applications from reading clipboard content and writing anything to clipboard directly. This, as security measure, prevents malicious web sites from reading passwords or other personal information you copied to clipboard moments ago.

With all that we had to workaround these restrictions. And we did our best to streamline the workflow and minimize number of any additional actions you need to make in order to copy or paste something.

Most of the time you do not really have to think about these two separate clipboards. The only situation, when that becomes visible, is when you copy something in the cloud application and do not get the selection from Clipboard Manager. Then if you press Ctrl-V in the cloud application, what was copied in the cloud application earlier gets pasted from the server clipboard. If you press Ctrl-V (or ⌘-V if you use Mac) in an application running locally, content from local clipboard will be pasted.

Known Limitations

Currently Clipboard Manager does not support copying pure image data (like when you select image in LibreOffice Writer document and copy it) and working with clipboard is not currently supported on iPad.

“The earthquake of cloud computing shook up the way we do IT. One of the aftershocks is that more things will be done in the browser. rollApp allows you "move” your applications to the cloud and “stream” them to devices. So. if you want to run iPhone apps on Android, or MSOffice on an iPad, or Java on a Chrome OS device, you need rollApp.“ - Victor said about our company.

rollApp Launches Free Beta “OpenOffice on iPad” Cloud-Service

Today, at the DEMO Spring 2012 conference, rollApp Inc. announced the launch of its free beta “OpenOffice on iPad” online service, available at http://www.rollApp.com/OpenOffice .

rollApp is developing technology that instantly moves existing applications to the cloud. It will enable rollApp users to run any existing software on any device that has a browser. Today this technology allows rollApp to offer millions of office users an access to their favorite applications on iPad. The user does not have to install anything because the service works via browser. At the same time, rollApp provides an experience almost identical to applications installed locally.

Apache OpenOffice is a leading office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics and more. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages, including Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is open source software, therefore, the users of the rollApp service will not face any licensing risks.

rollApp is integrated with popular cloud storage providers such as Dropbox, Box (former Box.Net) and Google.Docs. Because of this, users can work directly with all of the files they host in the cloud.
“New devices and platforms rapidly emerge these days. rollApp’s technology allows the reuse of existing programs, such as OpenOffice, on new devices, such as iPad. So, instead of spending their time and energy on porting programs to yet another platform, engineers can focus on developing new functionality,”
said Bjarne Stroustrup, the author of C++ programming language and member of the rollApp Advisory Board.
“These days, tablets have become mainstream. People want to use their favorite applications on new devices like iPad. rollApp makes it possible,”
said Vlad Pavlov, rollApp founder and CEO.

While in the beta phase, the rollApp service is free. Currently, rollApp is building its server capacity. Once registered, a user may have to wait before her account is activated.

rollApp welcomes software vendors to partner in making their desktop products available on iPads and other tablet devices.
